In part two of Tma02, our tutor group was separated into four smaller groups of five people. Each group had to make a web channel with each person choosing a subject from a list, then making a page about it.
I found working as a group quite different from working alone because it meant that we had to reach a consensus about the project. It was also significantly slower to get started as a group owing to the fact that we had to wait for everyone to contribute before making decisions. Some of the group were a slightly behind with their coursework and felt a somewhat pressurised into contributing at a certain time. Others hardly contributed to the discussion at all but preferred to work quietly in the background though it would have been better to be kept more informed of their progress. After this experience, I had a low opinion of group working and favoured working alone on projects.
This was until we had to work in small groups (again) for exercise 5 of Module 2: "Developing web authoring skills". A web channel was required from each group yet again. Our tutor had resigned at this time so we joined another tutor group that consisted of only 4 or 5 students. The group work helped to break the ice with some of our new colleagues. This time, the project was more organised and more people contributed than in the previous project. There were no conflicting ideas or lack of enthusiasm. The group seemed to help and support each other with any problems. We were more experienced with group work.
