Subject title: Microsoft breakup. Date posted: 06.06.00. Posted by: Ken Foster.
Basically the US have strong anti trust laws and Microsoft stands accused of uncompetitive practice because their OS is on all new PCs they bundle software like internet explorer thus stifling competition and further development. As a result the anti trust courts have ordered Microsoft to split into two divisions one for OS one for software. The argument was mainly about netscape and is considered irrelevant as by the time the change is implemented the market will have moved on. Microsoft of course say it will be bad for consumers. I f you go to the Financial Times site, look at view navigation, in the sub menu look at archive click then search on Microsoft break up' you will get 200 entries in the last three months - no I haven't read them all. The earlier ones are about the court case - later ones are all the wriggling The Guardian also has an archive site, I suppose all the other papers do too but I use the FT. It's free and a good place to start. No doubt Microsoft home page has something to say too. When the judgement was announced the NASDAQ dived so personally I think the implications are financial rather than technical - and I'm still struggling with framesets! You know me just trying to help! Hopefully others will be on board soon Regards Ken

Subject title: A few large software companies... Date posted: 08.06.00 Posted by Stephanie Bell.
I'm glad that there are just a few large software companies for office applications (MS, Lotus and Corel are the main ones I think and I have all 3!). I don't want to learn how to use any more application programs!

If there were many smll companies developing this type of software they wouldn't get very far IMO because people are already accustomed to the main ones (above).

I think it's probably too late for things to change unless a new company arrived on the scene which was easier to use and offered cheaper software. Even then I personally would probably stick with the main ones. Most office jobs I've seen advertised (that involve computer skills) require knowledge of MS Office.

Even with web design employers seem to be asking for people with knowledge of MS Frontpage, Dreamweaver and Flash so I've seen on the web. So the same situation could happen with these companies too!

Steph.
