In this assignment, we had to write about operating systems and how they helped the development of the personal computer. I received an overall mark of 60%. I understand why it was so low – compared to the two previous assignments that received very high marks. I think I became a little over-confident with my ability to write essays so I left the assignment to the day before it was due in. I then rushed through the essay plan, did thorough research about operating systems (half of which I couldn’t remember any details about) then wrote up a draft essay. I did not spend enough time modifying it. My tutor’s feedback comments included this statement: “Your introduction doesn’t really ‘set the scene’ for the rest of the essay by saying what you are going to cover”. I knew (after reading this) what I had done wrong. My essay was more like a list of operating systems with a few comments added at the end than a flowing article that would keep the reader intrigued. My tutor also said in his comments that I, “should aim for a more ‘academic’ writing style”. This I think is because I included the term: IMO, which stands for ‘In my opinion’. Also, I think it is because the introduction, main body and conclusion didn’t follow on from each other very well. I decided after this, to spend more time understanding what was required and on planning essays before starting the next assignment (for which I received 78%). |
